Course Description

Currently, the IRS only requires practitioners who represent taxpayers before the IRS to follow Circular 230 due to the Loving case. Even though tax representation creates a jurisdiction hook, tax representatives can still run afoul for tax preparation issues under Circular 230. The session covers the basics of IRS Office Professional Responsibility, how it functions, handles cases and interacts with tax practitioners. We will also cover, jurisdictional issues of who is subject to Circular 230 and the sanction power of OPR. We will also cover what to do in a situation where OPR reaches out to you as a practitioner for possible violations of Circular 230.

Learning Objectives

  • Basics of the IRS Office Professional Responsibility
  • Jurisdictional issues of who is subject to Circular 230
  • How OPR could levy a penalty
  • Sections of Circular 230 that create a duty for tax practitioners to follow as not to violate Circular

Fantastic Teacher! Great coverage of the material. Presenter gave good suggestions for best practices within the firms to stay in compliance. Made what can be a dry topic interesting with the actual examples of real life cases.

This was a great training on ethics. Included some different perspectives that I didn't expect.I learned far more in this webinar than any other Ethics course I've ever taken. I very much enjoyed the presentation and how interesting the whole topic of Ethics is in formulating rules, etc.
