Course Description

Course Description

California has always been known for being non-conformist, and the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act gave us plenty of opportunities to prove it!

Recent legislation gave us some conformity, but we still have lots of work to do.

With the help of this CE/CPE webinar, we’ll explore the new expanded Schedule CA using a case-study tax return to highlight the differences between Federal and California taxes, as well as how and where to report them.

Most states in modeling their state income tax laws conform to the Internal Revenue Code ("IRC"), subject to minor adjustments. California on the other hand has a much different tax structure with fewer deductions and credits, less amortization and depreciation in earlier years, and generally more income subject to taxation than that permitted under the federal tax system.

As such, practitioners should fully understand the nuances of the California franchise/income tax system and how the state laws differ from the IRC before embarking on any corporate tax planning projects and this CE/CPE tax course will help you with that.

California only selectively conforms to the IRC.

As such, California either directly incorporates a section from the IRC, will not explicitly incorporate the IRC section but will restate it in a manner in which it is nearly identical, will apply a completely different law, or will disregard it completely. As such, practitioners cannot necessarily rely on basic rules outlined in the IRC to determine a taxpayer's taxable income for California franchise tax purposes.

This CE/CPE tax webinar will also help you to understand how and where to report such nonconformity items.

  • To identify areas of California's conformity to federal tax law.

good course for CA tax specialists

I'm a tax preparer located in Utah, so the only exposure that I have to CA taxes is when I prepare a return for a taxpayer who works in or has a business in CA and is a non-resident. Even so, some of the same principles apply to the non-resident CA form. CA tax law is definitely confusing, but this course did help to clarify a few issues.
