Course Description

A one-on-one is a scheduled, face-to-face meeting between you and an employee. As the name implies, the participants in this meeting are just you and another person.

Unlike other meetings, like those about status updates or employee performance, the one-on-one is less formal. It can address a wide range of issues that don't fit in other discussion or meeting types, such as concerns and frustrations relating to work or any inspiring ideas the employee may have.

As a manager, part of your duty may be to hold one-on-one meetings with your employees to check in on them and discuss issues of importance. To get the most out of a one-on-one meeting, it's important to understand why they're important and how to conduct them. Done effectively, they can strengthen your professional relationship with your employees and increase their morale and engagement.

One-on-one meetings often feel more hurried and disorganized than they need to be. It’s important to check in regularly with each of your employees, but how can you make the best use of the time?

How can you make the meetings more productive and collaborative?

What do you need to change as the manager and what do you need to ask your direct report to do differently as well?

Effective 1-on-1 meetings are one of the most impactful things a leader can do for their team.

In this CPE webinar, speaker Jeff Smith will share and demonstrate his unique and powerful method to conduct and develop effective 1-on-1s. His method can be used by both people managers and employees to bring structure to their 1-on-1s, take control over their personal development and improve the human experience of work.

Learning Objectives

  • To analyze a new way of thinking about recognizing employee wins.

  • To develop an understanding of the importance of and a technique for mutual feedback (i.e.: employee receives feedback and provide feedback to their manager).
