Course Description

Everything is worth what its purchaser will pay for it.

The world of business valuation is almost always outside of the bailiwick of the estate planner. Yet, because expert business valuation services are so necessary to the success of many aspects of estate and tax planning, estate planners are faced often with the daunting task of engaging and working with a business appraiser on a client matter.

The problem for most estate planners is that few of us know enough about the intricacies of business valuation to know whether the work of the business appraiser is on the right track usually until it’s too late, i.e., after the business appraisal report is complete.

In this five-part series, valuation expert consultant Paul Hood explores business valuation for tax purposes from soup to nuts.

In this CPE webinar, valuation expert consultant Paul Hood will discuss the following topics:

  • Introduction to Tax Valuation.
  • Fundamental Concepts of Defining Value.
  • Business Appraiser Credentialing.
  • Business Valuation Trade Associations.
  • Defining the Business Valuation Engagement.
  • Anatomy of a Business Valuation Engagement Letter.

Learning Objectives

  • To discuss the fundamental concepts of defining value: standard of value, premise of value and level of value.
  • To become familiar with business appraiser credentialing. How business appraisers are credentialed and what the major business credentials are and the organizations that offer those credentials.
  • To review the main four business valuation trade associations.
  • To define the business valuation engagement: the client, the subject company, state of subject company entity organization, description of the subject interest, purpose and intended use of the business valuation report, limitations on the use and purpose of the business valuation report, date of the business valuation report, and the “as of” date.
