Course Description

For many of our clients, their home represents a substantial amount of their net worth. The lure of additional income and/or the benefits associated with the barter of their property to others via such web-enabled platforms as Airbnb, VRBO, Couchsurf and many others make it very convenient to offer their homes to others.

Unfortunately, such activities can put their assets in jeopardy. Understanding how homeowner insurance coverage is affected by these activities must be understood by the financial professional to provide sound counsel.

This estate planning CPE webinar will address how our clients, either as the owner of the home used by others or the user of the home owned by others may find limitations or outright exclusions – for both property and liability risks in today’s homeowner policy.

Learning Objectives

  • To identify activities that entice our clients to make their homes available to others
  • To explore advantages for the property owner when they share their homes
  • To recognize advantages for the property user in these relationships
  • To recall disadvantages for the property owner and property user when homes are shared
  • To identify changes to the ISO Homeowner Policy as a result of the mandatory Home Sharing Host Activities Amendatory Endorsement and the concerns they cause
  • To explain the three new definitions found in this endorsement: “Home-sharing host activities” “Home-sharing network platform” “Home-sharing occupant”
  • To explore how the definition of “business” is changed for home-sharing activities and how these changes can be problematic for the homeowner
  • To identify property concerns for a homeowner’s property used as part of home sharing activities
  • To recall liability concerns for a homeowner when their property is used as part of home-sharing activities
  • To introduce to the financial professional the Homeowner Amendatory Endorsements designed to address at least some of the issues discussed when our clients offer their property or use property of others in home-sharing activities
