In this webinar, Excel expert - David H. Ringstrom, CPA shows ways to improve the integrity and ease of use of your spreadsheets by way of the Data Validation and Form Control features in Excel. You will also see how to reduce ongoing spreadsheet maintenance, as well as see ways to protect formulas, inputs, and worksheets.

Topics covered:

  • Allowing users to make multiple choices by way of the ListBox form control.
  • Avoiding the need to merge cells—use the Text Box feature for paragraphs of text instead.
  • Crafting data validation lists that are contingent on selections from a preceding list.
  • Creating self-expanding drop-down lists with Excel’s Data Validation feature.
  • Enabling the hidden Developer menu in Excel to access additional functionality.
  • Ensuring proper VLOOKUP integrity by using Data Validation to create an in-cell drop-down list.
  • Future-proofing VLOOKUP by using Excel’s Table feature versus referencing static ranges.
  • Identifying data validation overrides by way of the Circle Invalid Data command.
  • Limiting users to entering whole numbers in a worksheet cell by way of Data Validation.
  • Making it harder for a user to circumvent data validation and easy for you to identify when someone has attempted to do so.
  • Overcoming VLOOKUP’s quirks by using the SUMIF function to look up numeric values.
  • Preserving key formulas using hide and protect features.
  • Protecting hidden sheets from within a workbook.
  • Protecting sensitive information by hiding formulas within an Excel workbook.
  • Removing data validation from a worksheet when needed.
  • Removing the Table feature from Excel spreadsheets once it’s no longer needed or simply erasing the alternate row shading.
  • Streamlining data entry in Excel with the CheckBox form control.
  • Streamlining the filtering of lists in Excel 2013 and later by using the Slicer feature with tables.
  • Unlocking all data validation cells at once within a worksheet as opposed to tracking cells individually.
  • Using Data Validation to create a rule that ensures dates entered within a cell are greater than or equal to today’s date
  • Using Excel’s IFERROR function to mask # sign errors, such as #N/A.
  • Using the ComboBox form control to create a searchable drop-down list.
  • Viewing properties that can be set for specific form controls; for example, whether the object should be printed or not.
