Course Description

Course Description

Statement on Standards for Accounting and Review (SSARS) No. 21 represents the efforts of the AICPA's Accounting and Review Services Committee (ARSC) to clarify and revise the existing standards for reviews, compilations, and engagements to prepare financial statements as a result of ARSC Clarity Project.

SSARS No. 21 comprises four sections:

  • Section 60, General Principles for Engagements Performed in accordance with Statements on Standards for Accounting and Review Services
  • Section 70, Preparation of Financial Statements
  • Section 80, Compilation Engagements
  • Section 90, Review of Financial Statements

SSARS 21 changed the standards for the CPAs, who are associated with non-audit client financial statements. A major change was the introduction of a new level of service and preparation engagements. This change was not immediately embraced by most CPAs in public practice, and many have not provided the service in most situations. Today more CPAs are seeing how the service benefits clients and have found the engagement to be a practical solution to avoiding some complex and risky engagements.

This Online CPE Accounting program will discuss the details of the standard and explore the opportunities for CPA firms that preparation engagements can offer.  Included in the program will be a summary of all current Standards with an emphasis on SSARS 22-25.

Learning Objectives

  • To discuss the concepts in SSARS 21 engagements.
  • To explain when SSAR standards apply.
  • To explore the application of standards related to AR-C 70, Preparation Engagements.
  • To update participants on changes made in SSARS 21 – 25.
  • To explain the differences between preparation, compilation, and review standards.
  • To review the new focus on the engagement letter related to SSARS engagements.
