AI chatbots are everywhere, from ChatGPT to Gemini to DeepSeek, but here’s the million-dollar question: What exactly are they collecting about you? At a minimum, they all scoop up diagnostics and device identifiers. That’s table stakes. But some go much, much further. Take Google’s Gemini—it’s the most data-hungry of the bunch, grabbing 22 out of 35 possible data types. We’re talking about your name, email, precise location, contacts list, browsing and search history, and more. Powerful? Sure. But privacy-friendly? Not so much.
On the flip side, ChatGPT, Claude, and Perplexity are lighter on data. ChatGPT doesn’t even track you for ads, and offers options to turn off chat history or delete your data, refreshing, right? But beware: Copilot, Poe, and Jasper do collect data used for tracking, which could be shared with advertisers or even sold to data brokers. And DeepSeek? It sits in the middle... except it’s already had a major data breach exposing millions of chat records. Yikes. Bottom line: If you value privacy, look beyond the AI’s smarts. Always check what it's collecting and what it might do with it.
Until next time…
