The U.S. government shutdown that started on October 1, 2025, has become the longest in the country's history, causing an economic freeze costing roughly $15 billion weekly and potentially up to $120 billion if it goes into the holiday season. Over 1.4 million federal employees are affected, alongside millions of passengers facing flight delays, and families reliant on benefits, with the Congressional Budget Office projecting significant impacts on quarterly growth and long term confidence in government credibility if the shutdown extends beyond Thanksgiving.
The U.S. government shutdown that began on October 1, 2025 has officially become the longest in American history. Every passing week is costing the economy roughly $15 billion, with analysts warning that extended disruption could wipe out up to $120 billion if it lasts through the holiday season. More than 1.4 million federal employees are either furloughed or working without pay, and over 3.2 million passengers have faced flight delays as unpaid air-traffic controllers struggle to keep the skies safe. The Federal Aviation Administration has already announced flight reductions at 40 major airports, while loan approvals, food aid programs, and small-business funding remain frozen. The Congressional Budget Office estimates that if the shutdown stretches beyond Thanksgiving, it could shave 2 percentage points off quarterly growth, with around $14 billion in output permanently lost.
Beyond the numbers, the human toll is mounting. Families relying on SNAP benefits are facing delays, thousands of children have lost access to Head Start programs, and contractors across federal agencies are being forced to furlough workers of their own. Even if Congress eventually approves back pay, the long-term damage to consumer confidence and government credibility could take months to repair. This isn’t just another budget standoff, it’s an economic freeze that’s touching every corner of America, from grounded flights and unpaid workers to shuttered parks and delayed paychecks. And the longer Washington stays gridlocked, the steeper the price tag becomes.
