Atlanta-based firm Aprio has appointed James Lockhart as its new real estate industry leader, replacing the outgoing Alan Vaughn. Lockhart, who brings 25 years of experience in real estate advisory services, will oversee the enhancement of Aprio's platform across sectors including commercial real estate, construction lending, and affordable housing.
Atlanta-based firm Aprio has announced the appointment of James Lockhart as its new real estate industry leader, effective May 1, 2026. Lockhart succeeds Alan Vaughn, who has been instrumental in building the firm's real estate practice over the past four decades. Vaughn will continue with Aprio as a partner, ensuring a smooth transition during a time of significant change in the commercial real estate sector.
Lockhart brings a wealth of experience to his new role, with 25 years of advising developers, investors, private equity sponsors, REITs, and family offices on tax structures, capital transactions, and investment strategies. Since joining Aprio, he has played a key role in expanding the firm's national presence in commercial real estate, construction, and affordable housing. Lockhart also holds the position of vice-chair of the American Bar Association’s real estate private equity committee.
Under Lockhart's leadership, Aprio plans to enhance its platform across various sectors, including commercial real estate, construction lending, affordable housing, and opportunity zone investments. The firm aims to implement a connected advisory model that spans multiple asset classes and markets, leveraging its depth of talent to navigate the evolving capital environment and the increasing role of AI in the industry.
Richard Kopelman, CEO of Aprio, expressed confidence in Lockhart's ability to lead the firm into its next chapter. He highlighted Lockhart's exceptional experience and deep relationships as key assets in helping clients adapt to the shifting landscape. Kopelman also acknowledged Vaughn's legacy in establishing Aprio as a trusted advisor to real estate stakeholders nationwide, a foundation that Lockhart will continue to build upon.
