KPMG has appointed Douglas O'Donnell, former IRS acting commissioner, as senior managing director in its Washington national tax practice. O'Donnell will co-lead the tax controversy and dispute resolution group, leveraging his nearly 40 years of IRS leadership experience to advise clients on complex international tax matters amid rising cross-border tax disputes.
KPMG LLP has appointed Douglas O’Donnell, former IRS acting commissioner, as senior managing director within its Washington national tax practice. His arrival comes amid rising cross-border tax disputes and increased enforcement efforts by global tax administrations.
O’Donnell brings nearly 40 years of IRS leadership experience, having served as acting commissioner, deputy commissioner, and commissioner of the Large Business and International Division. In these roles, he oversaw approximately 100,000 employees, led strategic planning, and drove organizational transformation during a period of significant agency modernization. His work included extensive engagement with foreign tax administrations through the OECD Forum on Tax Administration.
At KPMG, O’Donnell will co-lead the tax controversy & dispute resolution group, advising clients on complex issues with both the IRS and foreign tax authorities, and developing strategies to prevent disputes. Firm leaders highlighted his unparalleled insight into the global tax landscape and ability to guide clients through heightened regulatory challenges. O’Donnell expressed enthusiasm for joining KPMG’s Washington national tax team and contributing to its commitment to delivering exceptional client value.
