Grant Thornton has appointed Rick Surett as its new Chief Financial Officer, replacing the retiring Muhammad Bhayat. Surett brings 30 years of financial leadership experience and is expected to guide the company through its ongoing growth and expansion, building on his track record of financial optimisation and strategic transformations.
Grant Thornton has announced the appointment of Rick Surett as its new Chief Financial Officer, effective June 2. Surett succeeds Muhammad Bhayat, who is retiring after more than two decades with the firm.
Surett brings nearly 30 years of financial leadership experience across public markets, private equity-backed enterprises, and organizations with complex capital structures. His background positions him to guide Grant Thornton through its continued growth and global expansion.
“Rick brings a wealth of experience and a fresh perspective that will help us continue driving value for our clients and our people — especially now, as we expand our multinational platform from America across Europe and into the Middle East,” stated Jim Peko, CEO of Grant Thornton. He also acknowledged Bhayat’s contributions, emphasizing that his leadership has had a lasting impact on both the firm's operations and its people.
Prior to joining Grant Thornton, Surett served as CFO of Transportation Equipment Network, North America’s largest full-service trailer leasing company. During his tenure, he enhanced operational efficiency and positioned the company for scalable growth. His previous roles also include CFO at Ports America and director of corporate development at Avaya, underscoring a career marked by strategic transformation and financial optimization.
Reflecting on his new role, Surett noted his eagerness to build on the firm’s momentum: “Joining Grant Thornton as CFO will mean partnering with our exceptional teams across the organization to strengthen our financial strategy and support the firm’s continued momentum. I can’t wait to get started.”
