New York-based firm Grassi has appointed Timothy (TJ) Beary as the leader of its State and Local Tax (SALT) and Tax Controversy practices. Beary, who has 20 years of experience in complex tax environments, will strengthen Grassi's state and local tax planning capabilities, underlining the firm's commitment to provide tailored solutions in the changing regulatory landscape.
Grassi, a New York-based firm with FY23 net revenue of $132.6 million, has announced the appointment of Timothy (TJ) Beary as partner and leader of its State and Local Tax (SALT) and Tax Controversy practices. Operating from the firm’s Boston area offices, Beary will support clients on a national scale, bringing two decades of experience in navigating complex state and local tax environments.
Beary is recognized for his ability to build high-performing teams and craft client-centric strategies tailored to diverse tax challenges. His areas of specialization include compliance, reporting, strategic tax advisory, risk mitigation, tax technology, and controversy resolution. He has particular expertise in nexus studies and multistate tax compliance, positioning him to lead Grassi’s growing SALT and controversy practices with depth and precision.
This appointment follows Grassi’s recent expansion into Massachusetts through the integration of Anstiss & Co., marking another step in the firm’s strategic growth. Beary’s arrival bolsters the firm’s capabilities in state and local tax planning and enhances its ability to provide multistate compliance and resolution services for complex tax matters.
Before joining Grassi, Beary served as a partner at Baker Tilly, where he led specialty tax and SALT services across multiple industries. His career also includes significant leadership roles at two Big Four firms, where he oversaw multistate tax compliance, advisory engagements, tax due diligence, and nexus evaluations tied to mergers and acquisitions.
Beary’s addition reflects Grassi’s continued investment in specialty tax leadership and its commitment to delivering tailored solutions across an evolving regulatory landscape.
