The Iowa Society of CPAs (ISCPA) has announced the appointment of Carrie Steffen as its next Chief Executive Officer, effective May 19.
Steffen brings over 25 years of experience in the accounting profession to her new role. Most recently, she served as co-founder and president of The Whetstone Group, where she championed the discipline of growth across firms ranging from sole practitioners to national firms. Her work has influenced firm leadership while shaping the professional development of thousands of staff members, marketing professionals, and industry consultants through extensive speaking and training initiatives.
Reflecting on her appointment, Steffen emphasized the enduring human element in the profession, stating, “It’s an amazing time to be in accounting. CPAs have so many incredible opportunities, and while the accounting landscape is changing quickly, what remains the same is that people are at the heart of the profession.” She expressed enthusiasm about collaborating with the ISCPA team and board of directors to support current and future CPAs and voiced her commitment to helping ISCPA tackle some of the profession’s most pressing challenges.
ISCPA chair Erik Bonstrom praised Steffen’s selection, highlighting her broad experience and passion for the accounting community. “Carrie brings a wealth of experience serving CPAs as president of the Whetstone Group Inc., is a nationally recognized speaker, and was the national marketing director for a large CPA firm,” said Bonstrom. “I know that members will benefit from Carrie’s passion for supporting CPAs.”
Bonstrom also recognized the contributions of Ardis Kelley, who has served as ISCPA’s interim CEO. Kelley, a former executive with the Federal Home Loan Bank of Des Moines and an ISCPA member, led a significant legislative initiative for an alternative pathway to becoming a CPA in Iowa, while also stabilizing the organization and supporting its staff during a critical period. Kelley will continue to assist with the transition following Steffen’s appointment to ensure continuity and organizational strength.
The selection process was conducted by a committee composed of current and past ISCPA executive committee board members, who engaged a local executive search firm to identify suitable candidates after the resignation of former CEO Dawn Latham in November.
Steffen’s appointment marks a new chapter for ISCPA as it continues its mission to support and advocate for the accounting profession amid evolving industry dynamics.
Until next time…
