Apple paid $17 billion in corporate income taxes to Ireland in fiscal 2025, accounting for nearly 40% of its global corporate income tax payments. The large payment linked to a historic tax dispute that began with Irish rulings in the 1990s which misleadingly allowed profits to be artificially attributed to 'head offices' on paper and thus decreased the tax that Apple paid to Ireland; the issue was later challenged by the European Commission in 2016, settled in court in 2024, and eventually led to Apple's payment and a continuation of scrutiny over its tax structure.
