Former Austin hedge fund manager, Justin Ryan Schmidt, was sentenced to 37 months in prison by a federal judge in Texas for concealing millions in income, moving assets offshore, and providing false information while renouncing his U.S. citizenship. Schmidt's case is a warning to high-net-worth taxpayers that renouncing U.S. citizenship does not erase past obligations or shield future U.S.-sourced income from IRS scrutiny.
