The UK's Financial Reporting Council (FRC) handed PwC UK a fine of £3.25 million ($4.4 million) and audit engagement partner John Waters an additional fee of £59,062 for significant breaches in adherence to professional standards during the audits of Babcock International in FY2019 and FY2020. The penalties, which follow a previous FRC sanction in 2023, highlight serious and numerous breaches in areas such as cash pooling, audit evidence and challenging management accounting, bringing to light serious reputational hits despite PwC's strong commercial figures.
This comes amidst previous oversight issues during the auditing of Babcock's contracts where another team showed no evidence of understanding or translating contracts valued at €640 million. The regulator affirmed failures in skepticism, evidence gathering and challenge of management, raising concerns over the company's long-standing audit effectiveness. These oversight failures led to eventual financial restatements for FY2021 linked to earlier breaches. PwC is now ordered to review its audit practices while Babcock stakeholders deal with the aftermath, including huge restatement costs, credibility reviews and legal costs.
