FinCEN has issued a final rule on the Corporate Transparency Act (CTA) that greatly reduces its scope. Originally intended to make it harder for criminals to utilize anonymous shell companies for illicit activities, it required a significant amount of personal information from the beneficial owners of about 32 million American businesses. Following numerous legal battles and concerns of compliance costs and privacy risks, finCEN has now limited its enforcement to certain foreign businesses operating in the US, significantly easing the burden on local companies.
