A recent study showed that across the 10 highest-tax states in the U.S, the average projected lifetime tax bill is around $1.13 million, nearly 50% higher than the national average of $762,272. New Jersey is the highest taxing state with a lifetime bill of $1.36m for residents, equivalent to 48.2% of their estimated lifetime earnings; the state's estimated lifetime bill rose by $372,289 since 2024.
