Illinois has enacted a law requiring annual independent audits of large frontier artificial intelligence developers, making it the first US state to do so. The Artificial Intelligence Safety Measures Act mandates that companies create, adhere to, and publish frameworks for managing risks, and also establishes significant penalties for violation, but the specifics of conducting these audits and who is qualified to do so remain to be defined.
