Walmart has partnered with OpenAI to integrate AI technology into shopping experiences on ChatGPT, an application already used by many consumers. The collaboration, which saw Walmart stocks rise 5%, positions Walmart to significantly enhance revenues and directly compete with e-commerce giants like Amazon through agentic e-commerce, predictive purchasing and improved data intelligence allowing for greater personalization.
Walmart, the world’s largest retailer, with a staggering $648.1 billion in revenue for fiscal 2025, is stepping into the future of shopping. Partnering with OpenAI, Walmart has made a bold leap into artificial intelligence (AI) to transform how consumers shop, directly within ChatGPT. Shares of Walmart jumped 5% after the announcement, hitting a 52-week high, signaling investor confidence in Walmart’s long-term AI strategy. Even before the official integration, data from SimilarWeb showed ChatGPT referrals to Walmart’s site rose from 9.5% in August to 15% in September. This partnership isn't just a tech gimmick; it's a revolution that could redefine the retail landscape.
Walmart and OpenAI have joined forces to create an AI-powered shopping experience that allows customers and Sam’s Club members to shop right from within ChatGPT. The new feature uses OpenAI’s Instant Checkout, enabling a seamless and frictionless experience where you browse, discover, and purchase all within the app. No more bouncing between tabs or apps, just link your Walmart or Sam’s Club account to ChatGPT, ask for what you need, and hit “buy.” Right now, it’s limited to non-perishable goods and essentials, but with plans to expand to third-party sellers, this is just the beginning. The future of retail is here, and it’s conversational.
Walmart’s latest move isn’t just reactive; it’s proactive. With this new partnership, Walmart is diving headfirst into what CEO Doug McMillon calls a more “enjoyable and convenient future.” This shift from traditional e-commerce (searching, scrolling, clicking) to “agentic commerce” means AI doesn’t just react to what you ask, it anticipates your needs before you even realize them. Think your fridge is low on milk? ChatGPT will remind you and suggest a reorder. As McMillon puts it, “There is a native AI experience coming that is multimedia, personalized, and contextual.” No more endless scrolling. Just a simple conversation where the products come to you.
This partnership is a big deal for Walmart for several reasons.
Revenue Growth & Market Edge
Competing with Amazon
Boosting Data Intelligence
Expanding Reach and Brand Stickiness
The process is almost effortless:
Behind the scenes, Walmart’s AI system, including its proprietary assistant Sparky, handles everything from inventory to fulfillment. This hybrid model of generative AI assistants (Sparky + ChatGPT) is reshaping how customers interact with retail technology, making shopping faster and smarter.
With AI handling sensitive data, privacy is always a top concern. Walmart’s got that covered. The company has made it clear that this integration will be opt-in only, meaning users retain full control over what they share. Additionally, all transactions will be processed through Walmart’s secure checkout system. ChatGPT is simply facilitating the conversation and recommendations. The data remains within Walmart’s encrypted ecosystem, in compliance with U.S. consumer data protection standards. For extra peace of mind, Walmart is adopting ChatGPT Enterprise tools that offer advanced privacy and compliance features.
Walmart’s use of AI isn’t limited to this new ChatGPT integration. The company is already leveraging AI across its operations to drive efficiency and innovation:
These efforts demonstrate that Walmart’s AI strategy goes far beyond just improving shopping; it’s about reshaping the entire retail operation.
Walmart’s partnership with OpenAI isn’t just about making checkout easier; it’s about fundamentally changing how we shop. Moving from traditional search to AI-driven conversations, where products find you, not the other way around, is the future of retail. As Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, puts it, “We’re excited to partner with Walmart to make everyday purchases a little simpler.” So next time you’re chatting with ChatGPT about what to cook for dinner, don’t be surprised if your shopping cart fills itself, thanks to Walmart’s leap from aisles to AI.
Until next time…
