Microsoft has announced it will discontinue its video-calling service, Skype, by May 5, 2025, in favor of its newer platform, Microsoft Teams. Skype's retirement comes after falling behind mobile-first rivals like Zoom, FaceTime, and WhatsApp, and its user base dramatically decreasing to 36 million from its peak of over 300 million, while Teams has grown to 320 million users.
