Miami businessman, Joseph Stewart, pleaded guilty to one count of tax evasion for failing to report $4.62 million of income from businesses providing internet access to US servicemembers in Afghanistan and Guantanamo Bay, causing an estimated tax loss of $1.57 million. Stewart purportedly misrepresented over $3.8 million in dividends as non-taxable loans, hence underreporting his income and tax obligations, leading to an indictment that reasserts the requirement of proper reporting and legality in offshore business activities.
