The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) has admitted to a data breach by a contractor, affecting over 400,000 taxpayer records. The breach, carried out by Charles Littlejohn between 2018 and 2020, exposed tax data of high-profile individuals like Elon Musk and Donald Trump, and notably, 90% of the records belonged to businesses. While it took until 2025 to uncover the full extent due to slow auditing and inadequate security protocols, experts are demanding improved security measures, tighter contractor vetting, and stronger penalties for unauthorized disclosures.
