Washington, D.C. mayor, Muriel Bowser, has signed an Act establishing an alternative CPA licensure pathway that replaces the traditional requirement of an additional 30 credit hours of education with a two-year professional experience requirement. Touted as potentially more cost-effective for candidates due to reduced tuition, the new pathway is still under congressional review and its focus on work experience places more responsibility on employers to ensure quality accounting work is being performed, potentially leading the professional qualification to be redefined.
