Guide to NY CPA CPE Requirements

CPE RequirementsEither 24 or 40 contact hours of acceptable formal continuing education (24 if concentrated in one of the recognized subject areas or 40 if in any combination of recognized subject areas). 
Initial CPE Hours
Newly licensed NY State CPAs who were licensed on or after January 1, 2020 become subject to the continuing education requirements on the January 1st within their initial registration period. The requirements apply to the first full calendar-year in their first registration period.
Ethics Requirement
Four (4) hours of ethics course approved by NYSED for every 3 years. Click here to view our course.
Content Requirement
Any licensee who supervises attest services or signs should have completed at least 40 hours of continuing education in accounting, auditing or attest during the prior three calendar years or in the calendar year in which the service is performed.

Auditing: Examination or review of internal and administrative controls, the public accounting profession examines and reports on financial statements.

Advisory Services: Behavioral Ethics, Business Law, Economics, Finance. and IT 
Learning Modes
100% of the total CPE that you earn in one continuing education year can be in self-study.
Eligible Learning Activities
Eligible learning activities include self-study, blended learning, nano-learning, Instructors, lecturers, Authoring (max 50%), University and more.
CPE Deadline
Renew your CPA license every three years from the date of license issuance.

Reporting

License Renewal
Renew your CPA license every three years from the date of license issuance,  if failed to renew by this date a licensee shall not be issued a triennial registration certificate by the Department and shall not practice unless and until the CPE requirement has been met. View more
