WASHINGTON (WA) CPA CPE REQUIREMENT OVERVIEW

CPE Requirements
120 hours in every three-year period, with a minimum of 20 hours per year.
License Renewal Period
Renew your license by 30th April triennially.
CPE Reporting Cycle
January 1 to December 31 each year.
Ethics Requirement
Four (4) hours of the Board-approved ethics and regulations course with specific application to the practice of public accounting in Washington State.
Carry Over Credits
Washington CPA cannot carry forward credits in the next reporting cycle.
Subject Area Restriction
  • No more than 60 hours for Non-technical subject courses are allowed in the three-year renewal period.
  • Self-realization, Spirituality, Personal health or fitness, Sports and recreation, Foreign languages or cultures; and any other subjects that do not contribute directly to the professional competence of the licensee are not allowed for CPE.

Following are restrictions on the qualifying learning activities:

  • A maximum of 12 hours of Nano learning credits are allowed.
  • Credit is limited to 60 hours combined for the following types of programs and CPE credit earned from these programs cannot apply toward the 20-hour yearly minimum:

1. First-time instructor/developer of a college or university course.

2. First-time instructor/developer of a CPE course.

3. Authorship of published articles, books, or other publications relevant to the profession.

The reporting of compliance with CPE requirements is concurrent with filing your renewal application. When you complete your application for renewal, you are required to certify that you complied with the board's CPE requirements and supporting documentation requirements. The board may verify through audit compliance with CPE and supporting documentation requirements as certified during the renewal application process. As part of this audit, the board may require additional information to demonstrate your compliance with the board's rules.

The following documentation of a CPA's participation in sponsored learning activities should be retained by the CPA for three years after the end of the CPE reporting period in which the credit was claimed for renewal purposes or three years after you apply for the license:

  • Sponsor's name
  • Participant's name
  • Title of the program
  • Date(s) attended
  • Number of CPE hours earned

The annual license renewal fee is $230 and if the CPA applies for the renewal late i.e. between May 1 and June 30 then an additional $100 late fee is also to be paid.

Yes, Washington State Board allows courses completed via nano learning courses to count towards WA CPE requirements. A maximum of 12 hours of Nano learning credits are allowed as per the Washington State Board of Accountancy. The program sponsor must be approved by NASBA's National Registry of Continuing Professional Education Sponsors or NASBA's Quality Assurance Service. myCPE is approved by NASBA for providing Nano Program Learning.

No, Washington (WA) CPAs cannot carry over excess credit earned in a particular renewal cycle.

  • Any individual who fails to complete the required CPE by the end of their CPE reporting period can request an extension prior to their expiration date.  
  • An individual is only allowed one CPE extension in any two consecutive CPE reporting periods (six-year period). 
  • Extension requests will be accepted from January 1 through June 30 of the renewal period.
  • Failure to complete the steps above on or before June 30 will result in a lapse of your credential on July 1

  • If your license was issued during the first calendar year of your CPE reporting period, you must have completed eighty CPE credit hours which is limited to forty CPE credit hours in nontechnical subject areas, and must include a four-credit hour Washington state board-approved ethics course.
  • If your license was issued during the second calendar year of your CPE reporting period, you must have completed forty CPE credit hours which is limited to twenty CPE credit hours in nontechnical subject areas, and must include a four-credit hour Washington state board-approved ethics course.
  • If your license was issued during the third calendar year of your CPE reporting period, you must have completed a four-credit-hour Washington state board-approved ethics course.
