Certified Public Accountant (CPA) is a designation given by the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA) to individuals who pass the Uniform CPA Examination and meet the education and experience requirements. The CPA designation helps enforce professional standards in the accounting industry. CPA (Certified Public Accountant) is the highest accounting credential in the United States. The Florida - Board of Accountancy provides assurance to the public that CPA (Florida) operates at the highest level of professional competence through, verification of education and experience credentials.

Subject Area Restriction
  • A maximum of 20 hours of credit can be claimed from behavioral subjects/ personal development/ software/ management/ communication courses; the rest of the courses shall directly contribute towards professional competence or through technical subjects.
  • Subjects such as spirituality, personal health and/or fitness, sports and recreations, foreign language, and production that will not contribute directly shall not be allowed.

Florida CPA requires 80 hours of CPE to be completed in every reporting period, July 1st through June 30th and must be reported to the Board by June 30th, biennially as part of the renewal process.

What are the Florida CPA CPE Requirements?

What are the Florida CPA Ethics Requirements?

Florida (FL) CPA has to earn at least 4 hours biennially in a Florida-specific ethics course approved by the Florida State Board of Accountancy. 

The ethics course shall consist of:

1. A review of Chapters 455 and 473, F.S., and the related administrative rules.

2. The ethics course may include other subjects including but not limited to: ethical conduct, core values, and competencies, professional responsibility, responsibility to clients and the public, case studies that require the application of ethical principles, national professional standards, and interpretations, and appropriate national issues related to the practice of accounting.

Florida State Board of Accountancy does not specify any subject areas for the study! It says that subject area must contribute directly to the professional competence of a person.   • Twenty-Four (24) credit hours in Governmental CPE if conducting audits controlled by the Government Auditing.

For a license issued the first time, use the day of the year a license was issued or reactivated, then go 3rd June 30ths into the future to determine the due date for your first reporting cycle. (ex: If licensed December 1, 2014, your initial license will expire December 31, 2015 and to renew you only pay the fee to receive a license to expire December 31, 2017. Your CPE re-establishment period began December 1, 2014 and will end June 30, 2017).

No, Florida Board of Accountancy does not allow courses completed via nano learning to count towards the state of Florida cpa cpe requirements.

  • A registrant must report, at a minimum, the CPE hours required for the registration renewal period.
  • Hours that exceed the number required for the current registration renewal period may not be carried forward to a subsequent registration renewal period.

There are two automatic extensions granted for Florida certified public accountants (Florida CPA) who do not meet the requirements by June 30. The first automatic extension ends September 15, provided the Florida CPA completes an additional 8 hours in Accounting and Auditing subjects (In total 88 hours). The second automatic extension ends December 31, provided the Florida CPA completes an additional 16 hours in Accounting and Auditing subjects (In total 96 hours which includes 36 hours of A & A, no more than 20 hours of behavior due no later than December 31).
