Course Overview

Congress created the Federal Employees Retirement System (FERS) in 1986, and it became effective on January 1, 1987. While some may be covered under CSRS, most current civilian employees are covered by FERS. 

With all the acronyms, it can be a confusing word salad of civil service retirement benefits. With three main components of your retirement package, many employees wait until they are close to retirement to explore the different components and learn the strategies to maximize the value of each.

This CE/CPE course provides in-depth information on the three major puzzle pieces, how to calculate their eligibility, and how they work together. Participants will learn the steps to take now for a comprehensive retirement plan later.  This course builds on a concept introduced in a previous course and leads participants to build the next piece of their retirement puzzle. 

FERS, however, does not cover military personnel or employees of state or local governments. Employees under FERS receive retirement benefits from three sources: the basic benefit plan, Social Security, and the Thrift Savings Plan, or TSP.
