Ethics Requirement
Four (4) hours in the subject area of ethics or professional conduct every two years. 
Carry over credits
You have to take a minimum of 80 hours of CPE credits in a reporting cycle, However Excess Credit of up to 40 hours can be carried forward to the next reporting cycle.
Subject Area Restriction
  • CPE courses in the areas of Personal Development, Communications & Marketing, Computer Software & Application, and Business Management & Organization are considered acceptable CPE. These subject areas should not be more than 20% of your CPE requirements.
  • Subjects such as spirituality, personal health and/or fitness, sports and recreations, foreign language, and production which will not contribute directly shall not be allowed.

Hawaii CPA requires 80 hours of CPE to be completed in every reporting cycle, From January 1 to December 31 biennially in odd-numbered years, and must be reported to the Board by December 31st biennially in odd-numbered years as part of the renewal process.

What is the Ethics Requirement for Hawaii Certified Public Accountants (CPA) Professionals?

Hawaii State Board of Accountancy has implemented a mandatory four (4) hours ethics requirement. This requires Hawaii CPA license holders to take four hours of ethics education every CPE reporting cycle. Any Ethics CPE credits also count towards fulfilling the total 80 CPE credits required over 2 years. Regulatory AICPA Ethics, Circular 230 Ethics, Behavioural/Business Ethics, and Other State Ethics all subject areas are approved for qualifying as ethics as long as it meets NASBA standards.
