For all Annual Filing Season Program (AFSP) professionals, now is the right time to obtain your certification and help you leap forward in your career. By taking Continuing Education (CE), tax preparers (excluding CPAs/ EAs/ Attorneys) are better positioned to work in the tax preparing industry. You will become eligible for a Record of Completion (RoC) certificate, which will help you gain new clients and achieve better recognition.

Although not compulsory, CE is encouraged for all tax return preparers. This course also offers many advantages that will give you an edge over your competitors. Thus, it is highly recommended you take up this program and acquire the RoC.

Tax Preparers who can register themselves for the Annual Filing Season Program (AFSP)?

This program has been primarily made to identify and promote the non-credentialed tax return preparers to enhance their knowledge and develop their filing season competence via continuing education. It is noteworthy to understand that, this program is not meant for credentialed tax preparers like tax attorneys, enrolled agents, enrolled retirement plan agents or enrolled actuaries as they already have a high- level of qualifications.

Advantages of taking AFSP - ROC (2024)

With the end of previous financial time, now is the time to take up the 2024 Annual Filing Season Program (AFSP) renewal and complete the 2024 Annual Federal Tax Refresher (AFTR). It will boost your professional expertise. It offers several other attractive benefits, such as:

  • It helps you to update your tax knowledge.
  • It Separates you from unenrolled preparers.
  • You can get easily recognized on the IRS Federal Tax Return Preparers directory.
  • You can gain more clients by providing more services like representation for the tax returns prepared and signed.

What are the requirements for getting an RoC for Annual Filing Season Program?

In order to receive RoC, tax preparers are required to get 18 hours of continuing education from the platform as approved by IRS. These hours must include 6 hours of the Annual Federal Tax Refresher Course which is also known as AFTR Course that covers the latest tax updates along with filing issues. This AFTR Course includes a test which is conducted at the conclusion of the course by approved CE Providers.

If the tax preparer has passed the test from the recognized state or national body then he is exempted from the AFTR course. However, he still needs to complete 15 hours of continuing education requirements.

Apart from meeting the CE requirements, the tax preparers are required to renew their Preparer Tax Identification Number (PTIN) for the next year and provide their consent to the obligation specified in Circular 230.
