  • No more than 24 hours of credit for behavioral or motivational courses are allowed in a three-year renewal period for those individuals engaged in public accounting.  There is no limit on personal development courses. (South Dakota CPA can earn CPE Credits from NASBA Approved CPE Providers as long as it directly relates to the professional competence of the person).
  • Self-realization, Spirituality, Personal health or fitness, Sports and recreation, Foreign languages or cultures; and any other subjects that do not contribute directly to the licensee's professional competence are not allowed for CPE.

South Dakota CPA requires 120 hours of CPE to be completed in every 3-year rolling reporting cycle with a minimum of 20 hours per year and must be reported to the Board by August 1 every year as part of the renewal process

CPAs must report online to the board about the continuing education earned during reporting board.

The following documentation of a CPA's participation in sponsored learning activities should be retained by the CPA  for four years:

  • Name and address of continuing education program sponsor
  • Title and description of the content
  • Dates of program
  • Location of the program; and
  • Number of credits

Any CPA claiming continuing professional education provided by informal organizations must maintain documentation as required by the South Dakota Board of Accountancy.

  • The annual license issuance and renewal fees for South Dakota (SD) CPA should not exceed $ 100.
  • The annual license renewal fees for CPA firms do not exceed $ 65 for each owner plus $ 100 for each firm practicing public accountancy in the state of South Dakota.

Yes, South Dakota State Board allows courses completed via nano learning courses to count towards SD CPE requirements. A registrant must report, at a minimum, the CPE hours required for the registration renewal period. Hours that exceed the number required for the current registration renewal period may not be carried forward to a subsequent registration renewal period.

If you are going to be short hours, you must contact the Board office as soon as possible and explain the situation. South Dakota Board of public accountancy allows for extensions to complete CPE hours. A 90-day extension period may administratively be granted on a one-time basis. If you need further extensions, you will be required to petition the Board explaining your reasons and request the period of time you feel is required to complete the CPE needed.

An individual certificate holder whose initial certificate was issued less than three years before the renewal date shall fulfill the following minimum requirements for continuing professional education:

  • Certificate holders whose initial certificate was issued less than one year before the renewal date: none;
  • Certificate holders whose initial certificate was issued at least one year but less than two years before the renewal date: 20 hours;
  • Certificate holders whose initial certificate was issued at least two but less than three years before the renewal date: 40 hours with a minimum of 20 hours per year.
