Frequently Asked Questions

CDPSE holders must earn and report at least 20 CPE hours each calendar year. They must also reach 120 total CPE hours over the applicable three-year certification period.

Yes. In addition to the annual minimum, ISACA requires 120 CPE hours during the certificant's three-year reporting cycle.

The required annual and three-year CPE cycle begins on January 1 of the year after certification. Eligible CPE earned after certification and before December 31 of that first year can be applied to the initial reporting period.

ISACA does not publish a separate ethics-hour minimum for CDPSE. Instead, holders must remain in compliance with ISACA's Code of Professional Ethics.

Qualifying CPE must be directly applicable to the CDPSE job practice. In practice, that means privacy-focused topics tied to governance, risk and compliance, data lifecycle management, and privacy engineering.

Yes. Structured self-study courses can qualify when they are directly relevant, and the provider issues a certificate of completion showing the number of CPE hours earned.

Yes. ISACA accepts professional education activities and meetings such as conferences, seminars, workshops, and related professional meetings when the content is directly applicable to the certification.

Yes. One CPE hour is based on 50 minutes of active participation, and ISACA allows reporting in quarter-hour increments. That means shorter compliant learning activities can still be reportable when properly documented.

Yes. ISACA allows the same professional activity to count toward multiple ISACA certifications when the activity is applicable to the job-related knowledge of each certification.

Generally, no. ISACA says CPE hours cannot be carried from one cycle year to the next, except for eligible hours earned after certification in the certification year and before December 31.

CPE hours should be reported by December 31 each calendar year and renewed by 1st January. ISACA also states that the annual maintenance fee is tied to annual renewal for the upcoming calendar year.

You should keep supporting documentation for 12 months following the end of each three-year reporting cycle. Records should identify the attendee, sponsor, activity, date, and CPE hours.

Yes. ISACA conducts an annual random CPE audit. If selected, you must provide written evidence of the activities you previously reported.

Failure to comply with the CDPSE CPE policy can lead to revocation of the credential. A revoked individual must stop presenting themselves as a CDPSE and may need to retake the exam and reapply, and reinstatement may involve additional fees.

Yes. ISACA offers retired and non-practicing status options for eligible CDPSE holders. Retired status removes both the CPE and annual maintenance-fee obligation, while nonpracticing status removes the CPE requirement but keeps the annual fee obligation.
