Simplifying Regulations for 2026

CPE Requirement

Complete 20 CPE hours each year and 120 CPE hours over the full 3-year certification period.

Ethics Requirement

No fixed ethics-hour minimum is published. Ethics and standards can still count when relevant to your role.

Initial CPE Hours

For newly certified CGEIT holders, the annual and 3-year cycle begins on 1 January of the following year. Hours earned from the certification date through 31 December of that year can be reported in the initial cycle.

Subject Areas

Your learning must be technical or managerial training directly applicable to IT governance and CGEIT job practice domains such as governance of enterprise IT, IT resources, benefits realization, and risk optimization. See details.

100% of CPD can be completed through self-study.

Eligible Learning Activities

Accepted activities include ISACA and non-ISACA professional education events, university courses, self-study, teaching and presenting, publications, exam question development, passing related professional examinations, ISACA board or committee service, body-of-knowledge contributions, mentoring, and vendor sales or marketing presentations. Published annual caps include vendor presentations 10 hours, mentoring 10 hours, ISACA boards and committees 20 hours, and body-of-knowledge contributions 20 hours in total.

CPE Deadline

Payment and reporting of CPE hours are due by 31 December to retain certification.

Your CGEIT credential can be revoked if you fail to meet the policy requirements or do not comply with an audit. If you later return to active status, you may need to re-take and pass the exam and submit a new certification application.

Yes. Retired CGEIT status may be available to certificants over age 55 who are permanently retired or permanently disabled, and nonpracticing status may be available to certificants no longer working in IT governance. In both cases, ISACA requires a formal status application.
