Designated Financial Services Advisor (DFSA) CE Requirements Overview

CE Requirements

DFSA holders must complete 30 CE hours over each 2-year CE cycle.

License Renewal Period

The designation must be renewed annually on the holder's anniversary date.

CE Reporting Cycle

The CE cycle is two years and starts in the first full year after the education requirements are completed. The first public CE cycle began January 1, 2024.

Ethics Requirement

Of the 30 CE hours, 10 hours must be in Ethics and Compliance.

Carry Over Credits

Up to 10 Professional Development hours may carry over to the next 2-year cycle. Ethics and Compliance hours cannot be carried over.

Simplifying Regulations for 2026

CE Requirement

Complete 30 CE hours every 2 years.

Ethics Requirement

Complete 10 Ethics and Compliance hours during each 2-year cycle.

Initial CE Hours

Your CE cycle begins in the first full year after you complete the designation education requirements. CSI states the first public CE cycle began January 1, 2024.

Subject Areas

Learning Modes

All CE can be completed through self-study programs.

Eligible Learning Activities

Eligible activities include CSI courses beyond the base designation path, third-party seminars and webinars, qualifying academic courses, conferences, educational writing, and teaching or speaking engagements. Company-specific product training counts only up to 5 Professional Development credits per cycle, and a full-day conference is capped at 7 credits. Read more.

CE Deadline

Complete your CE within the applicable 2-year cycle and before certifying annual renewal compliance.

Reporting Period

CE is tracked on a 2-year cycle, while designation renewal is completed annually on the original grant anniversary date.

License Renewal

Renew annually by your anniversary date. If you do not renew, you will not be in good standing, may not use the DFSA trademarks, and will be removed from the DFSA directory.

Carry Over Credits

You may carry over up to 10 Professional Development credits into the next cycle for approved activities. Ethics and Compliance hours cannot be carried over.

Record Retention

Keep supporting CE documentation on file for at least 3 years.

Renewal Fees

CSI’s public DFSA page says holders must pay an annual non-refundable licence fee.

If renewal is over 60 days late, CSI adds a $50 administration fee; if the lapse is over 1 year but under 5 years, it adds a $50 administration fee plus a $375 reinstatement fee, and CSI says all fees are taxable. Visit site.

DFSA holders are expected to self-assess whether a course relates to the DFSA competency profile and retain proof of completion for any audit. Activities formally approved by credible regulatory and professional organizations can also be acceptable when the content relates specifically to DFSA competencies.
