CPE Requirements

Complete 40 CPE hours each year.

License Renewal Period

Renew annually. The Board's licensing pages identify Public Accountant renewals as annual, with renewal information tied to September 30.

CPE Reporting Cycle

The annual CPE accumulation period is the 12-month licensure period immediately preceding the renewal date.

Ethics Requirement

Complete at least 4 hours of professional ethics every 3 years, beginning with the date of first renewal. View more.

Up to 20 excess hours may be carried into the immediately succeeding licensure period only.

Subject Area Restriction

Credit in Communication Arts; Mathematics, Statistics, Probability, and Quantitative Applications in Business; Economics; Business, Securities, and Administrative Law; Human Resources Policies; and Computer Software Applications should not exceed 50% of the total required CPE hours.

CPE Requirement

Initial CPE Hours

For a first-time licensee, complete 40 acceptable credits during the first full annual period following the year the original license was obtained.

Subject Areas

Acceptable without limitation are accounting, auditing, and ethics, specialized accounting areas of industry, administrative practices, taxation, and management services. Learning Modes

All CPE can be completed through self-study, provided the courses are from approved providers.

Eligible Learning Activities

Qualifying activities include programs from professional accounting societies, accredited college courses, formal self-study, in-firm education, NASBA meetings, and other formal, organized educational programs. Instructor credit is 3 hours per class hour for the first presentation only, capped at 50%; publications may count up to 50%; committee service and CPA exam prep do not count.

CPE Deadline

Complete CPE by the renewal date. Maine's Public Accountant materials state the hours are due at renewal on September 30.
