Carry-Over Credits
Maine LPA has to take a minimum of 40 CPE credits in a year However Excess Credit of up to 20 hours can be carried forward to the next reporting cycle.
Subject Area Restriction
  • A Maine (ME) LPA can complete a maximum of 20 CPE hours from Non-Technical subject areas such as Communication, Human resources, Computer Software Applications, Economics, Mathematics and Statistics, and Business Law in every reporting cycle.
  • Self-realization, Spirituality, Personal health or fitness, Sports and recreation, Foreign languages or cultures; and any other subjects that do not contribute directly to the professional competence of the licensee are not allowed for CPE.

Maine LPA requires 40 hours of CPE to be completed every year, From October 1st to September 30th and must be reported to the Board by September 30th of every year as part of the renewal process.

Maine (ME) LPA has to earn at least 4 hours in the subject area of ethics every three years. Regulatory AICPA Ethics, Circular 230 Ethics, or Behavioural Ethics all subject areas are approved for qualifying as ethics.   3. Formal correspondence or other individual study programs. Such programs must require registration and provide evidence of satisfactory completion.
  4. Formal organized in-firm education programs;
  5. Meetings of the National Association of State Boards of Accountancy (NASBA); and
  6. Other formal, organized educational programs

Please note that the following programs do not qualify for CPE credit

  1. Any program or course specifically designed to prepare for taking the LPA examination.
  2. Committee service with professional organizations.

Online renewal may require you to upload your CPE certificates of completion. If you are not liable to upload your certificates of completion, you should keep your copies in case the board performs an audit of your CPE, you will be responsible for submitting copies of your certificates of completion and/or verification of courses at the time of the audit. You must retain your documentation for at least three (3) annual licensure periods immediately preceding the current licensure period.

A late fee of $50 is assessed for failure to meet the CPE requirements for renewal during the renewal period and may result in disciplinary action. Any person who submits an application for renewal more than 90 days after the expiration date shall be subject to all requirements governing new applicants.

A Maine (ME) LPA whose initial license is issued between August 1 and March 31 must complete 20 hours of CPE for the first renewal cycle. A person whose initial license is issued between April 1 and July 31 is not required to complete any CPE for the first renewal.

No, the short video (Nano learning) method is not approved for the CPE requirements of a Maine Licensed Public Accountant (ME-LPA).
