  • Identify unrestricted, temporary restricted, and permanently restricted nonprofit funds.
  • Discuss best practices for tracking and reporting restricted funds.

Course Overview

Fund accounting plays a critical role in helping nonprofits stay compliant, transparent, and financially accountable. Whether you manage donor-restricted gifts, federal grants, endowments, or complex program funding, the pressure to track every dollar accurately is higher than ever. This course introduces you to the fundamental principles of fund accounting, explains why nonprofits and government entities rely on it, and highlights how proper tracking protects organizational reputation.

Building from these foundations, the CPE course walks through best practices for managing restricted and unrestricted funds, setting up internal controls, and complying with requirements under GAAP, FASB ASC 958, IRS Form 990, and 2 CFR 200. You will learn how to segregate resources, document donor intent, ensure accurate reporting in financial statements, and prepare for audits. Real-world case studies deepen the learning by showing what happens when fund tracking goes wrong and how top-performing nonprofits correct common issues.

Major Topics:

  • Fund Accounting Foundations
  • Restricted Funds Management
  • GAAP Compliance Requirements
  • Federal Grant Rules
  • Internal Controls Framework

This CPE course gives professionals a well-rounded understanding of proper fund management and provides actionable strategies they can apply immediately. Join us to strengthen compliance, improve reporting accuracy, and build donor and grantor confidence in your financial stewardship.
