Learning Objective

  • To analyze how to counteract and prevent technology’s negative effects on memory and attention.
  • To distinguish which supposed effects of technology are truly concerning from those that are merely hype.
  • To explore technology to support memory and learning in positive ways.
  • To design and plan your strategies for protecting memory and attention in a world rife with technology.

Course Overview

How are memory and attention changing in a world dominated by technology?

Do we need to protect our intellectual abilities from the effects of smartphones and search engines, and if so, what are the best ways to do this – especially when few of us can afford to opt out of technology altogether?

Join author and research psychologist, Dr. Michelle Miller, in tackling these questions that affect all professionals working in technology-driven environments. Dr. Miller will draw on her recent book “Remembering and Forgetting in the Age of Technology” to discuss what research says – and doesn’t say - about the cognitive impacts of the internet and mobile devices, and what it means for learning, working, and living well in the contemporary world.

Major Topics Covered In this Online CPE Personal Development Course:

  • Common myths and misconceptions about technology and the mind
  • How search engines may subtly undermine memory and learning
  • How does using cell phone cameras and GPS navigation affect memory
  • How the distractions caused by mobile devices affect memory
  • Whether frequent technology use reduces the ability to focus
  • Ways in which technology can improve certain forms of memory
  • Whether taking notes by hand is better than typing them on a laptop

In this highly CPE/CPD webinar, participants will learn how to make the most of technology’s advantages while avoiding the risks, with a special emphasis on the practical application of the latest research on memory and technology.
