What are the CPD Requirements for Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (CA-ICAEW) Professional?

On 1 November 2023, ICAEW's revised Continuing Professional Development (CPD) Regulations brought in new CPD requirements, including a minimum number of hours. Individuals affected by these regulations must identify their CPD category based on their work. Each category has specific minimum CPD hours, with a portion needing to be verifiable:

Practice:

Category 1: 40 hours (30 verifiable)

Category 2: 30 hours (20 verifiable)

Category 3: 20 hours (10 verifiable)

Working outside practice:

Category 1: 40 hours (15 verifiable)

Category 2: 30 hours (10 verifiable)

Category 3: 20 hours (5 verifiable)

Executives/trustees of charities working pro bono: ICAEW's CPD video for charity trustees (coming November 2023) or similar training with similar learning outcomes.

Starting from November 1, 2023, CA-ICAEW professionals are required to allocate at least one hour of their verifiable CPD each year to ethics. 

CA-ICAEW Professionals have the option to complete a minimum of one hour of ethics training through either:

i) By successfully completing the ICAEW ethics module designed for use by Members and Relevant Persons during the current CPD year or

ii) By participating in alternative ethics training that meets specific learning outcomes aligned with the ICAEW Code of Ethics.

Activity should be relevant and proportionate to your role(s). Following are the examples of learning activities recommended for ICAEW professionals:

From November 2021, you will no longer be required to declare your CPD status annually. There is no longer a need to declare compliance, exemption, or non-compliance. By renewing or continuing your membership you are stating your compliance with principal bye-law 56, which requires members to keep under review their needs for training and development regarding professional work undertaken. Where a need for development is identified, members are required to take prompt action to address that need.

Yes, since there is no minimum CPD requirement, the short video learning method can be qualified as a learning activity.
