To become a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) in the United States, you must complete a series of important steps governed by your State Board of Accountancy. While specific requirements can vary slightly by state, the overall path is similar across the country:
Steps to Become a CPA:
You must typically earn at least 150 semester hours of college coursework — more than a standard bachelor's degree. Most candidates either complete a master’s degree or additional undergraduate credits beyond their degree to meet this requirement.
Coursework must include a specified number of accounting, auditing, taxation, and business-related subjects.
Submit an application to your state board of accountancy or its designated agency. Once your education is approved, you’ll receive a Notice to Schedule (NTS) that allows you to book your CPA Exam sections.
The CPA Exam consists of four sections:
Most states require 1 to 2 years of relevant work experience under the supervision of a licensed CPA. Acceptable experience typically includes work in public accounting, government, industry, or academia.
Some states require candidates to pass a separate ethics exam, such as the AICPA Professional Ethics Exam, to ensure understanding of professional standards and responsibilities.
After completing all educational, exam, and experience requirements, you can submit your application for licensure to your state board. Some states may have additional steps such as background checks or fingerprinting.
Once licensed, CPAs must complete regular CPE hours — usually 40 hours per year — to maintain their active license status and stay updated on laws, standards, and best practices.
The Uniform CPA Exam is a computer-based exam divided into four sections:
Section | Testing Time | Number of Questions/Tasks |
---|---|---|
Auditing and Attestation (AUD) | 4 hours | 72 MCQs + 8 TBS |
Financial Accounting and Reporting (FAR) | 4 hours | 66 MCQs + 8 TBS |
Regulation (REG) | 4 hours | 76 MCQs + 8 TBS |
Business Environment and Concepts (BEC)* | 4 hours | 62 MCQs + 4 TBS + 3 Written Tasks |
MCQs: Multiple-Choice Questions
TBS: Task-Based Simulations
Written Tasks: Only applicable for BEC (to be revised under the 2024 CPA Evolution). Candidates can schedule each section separately and choose the order in which to take them. After passing the first section, you must complete the remaining three within 18 months. There are no scheduled breaks during each 4-hour testing session; however, optional breaks are available, during which the exam clock continues to run unless you choose an official scheduled break where the clock pauses.
After becoming a CPA, maintaining your license is crucial to continue practicing. Each state board of accountancy manages CPA license renewals, and while requirements vary slightly by state, the overall expectations are consistent:
CPA License Renewal: Most states require CPAs to renew their license every 1 to 2 years. The renewal deadline and process are set by the state board where you hold your license.
Typically, you will need to:
Failure to renew your license on time can result in penalties, late fees, or a lapse in your license status.
Continuing Professional Education (CPE) Requirements
To maintain an active CPA license, you must complete CPE hours within each renewal cycle. While specific hour requirements vary, most states require:
Some states require CPAs to complete a 2-hour to 4-hour Ethics course during every renewal period.
