Certified Public Accountant (CPA) is a designation given by the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA) to individuals that pass the Uniform CPA Examination and meet the education and experience requirements. UTAH (UT) CPA CPE REQUIREMENT OVERVIEW

CPE Requirements
80 hours every 2 even-numbered years
License Renewal Period
Utah CPAs are required to renew their license by December 31 of every even-numbered years
CPE Reporting Cycle
1/1 to 12/31 ending on even-numbered years for all licensees
Ethics Requirement

To complete at least one hour of continuing professional education that covers:

  • Continuing Education Chapter
  • Utah Administrative Code, R156-26a, Utah Certified Public Accountant Licensing Act Rule; and

To complete at least three hours of ethics education that cover one or more of the following areas:

  • The AICPA Code of Professional Conduct;
  • Case-based instruction focusing on real-life situational learning;
  • Ethical dilemmas faced by accounting professionals; or
  • Business ethics.
Carry Over Credits

A licensee who completes more than the required hours of CPE during the reporting period may carry forward up to 40 hours to the next succeeding reporting period.

CPE taken in the current reporting period and CPE hours carried forward from the previous reporting period shall qualify as general CPE hours only for the current reporting period.

Subject Area Restriction
  • Self-realization, Spirituality, Personal health or fitness, Sports and recreation, Foreign languages or cultures; and any other subjects that do not contribute directly to the licensee's professional competence are not allowed for CPE

What are CPE Requirements for Utah Certified Public Accountants (CPA) Professionals?

Qualifying learning activities by the board are:

Following are restrictions on the learning activities:

  • The maximum credit for instructors is 50% of the total hours
  • The maximum credit for published materials cannot exceed twenty-five percent (25%) of the CPE requirement.

CPAs are responsible for accurate reporting of CPE credits earned and should retain appropriate documentation of their participation in learning activities, including name and contact information of the CPE program sponsor, title and description of the content, date of program, location, and a number of CPE credits, all of which should be included in the documentation provided by the CPE program sponsor. Failure to complete or report CPE will result in denial of renewal of the CPA license or action by DOPL to revoke the CPA license. CPA must retain documentation for a minimum of five years from the end of the year in which the learning activities were completed.

Yes, Utah State Board allows courses completed via nano learning courses to count towards UT CPE requirements. The program sponsor must be approved by NASBA's National Registry of Continuing Professional Education Sponsors or NASBA's Quality Assurance Service and myCPE is approved by NASBA for providing Nano Program Learning.

  • A licensee who completes more than the required hours of CPE during the reporting period may carry forward up to 40 hours to the next succeeding reporting period.

An individual holding a current Utah license who fails to complete the required minimum CPE by the reporting deadline will not be allowed to renew their license until the required CPE hours have been completed and reported.

If the initial license term is less than the full two-year CPE reporting period, the CPA is required to complete 10 hours of CPE for each full quarter of licensure during the CPE reporting period.
