Working cohesively as a team isn’t always second nature. Add in language barriers, global time zones, and contrasting cultural norms, and it can be downright difficult to get teamwork right. But putting in the work to streamline cross-cultural collaboration has measurable advantages, including increased creativity and improved profitability.

Cultural differences may be awkward to address, but researchers have found that it’s beneficial to recognize these variations while also reflecting on our own assumptions about other cultures. This is called “cultural metacognition.” The more attuned you are, the more you can realize the full advantages of diversity on your team.

While assumptions are shortcuts the brain takes to simplify tasks, they can backfire in cross-cultural scenarios, often leading to stereotyping. Embracing cultural metacognition and fostering open dialogue can help mitigate such pitfalls, promoting a more inclusive and productive team environment.

Uncover the tools to embrace diversity, foster effective communication, and harness the unique strengths that each team member brings to the table. By mastering the art of cross-cultural collaboration, you'll propel your team toward success in an increasingly interconnected global landscape.

Join this PDC/RCH Session to discover practical strategies for enhancing team dynamics and overcoming the challenges associated with cross-cultural collaboration.

Learning Objectives

  • To explain what is Cross-Cultural Collaboration.
  • To identify the difference between collaboration and cross-cultural collaboration.
  • To explore how to deal with “turf protection.”
  • To discuss how to communicate more effectively in cross-cultural groups.
  • To analyze how to find “common ground” within groups.
  • To know how to deal with stereotypes and bias.
