Dive into the Digital Economy: Unraveling Canadian Indirect Taxes, Customs, and Trade in Today's Online Marketplace!

This CPD Tax Session will cover the Canadian indirect tax and customs & trade considerations for various stakeholders in today’s digital economy, from resident and non-resident companies selling their traditional goods and services online to those selling digital goods and services online.  The course will cover for both residents and non-residents of Canada, the registration, collection, and reporting of sales taxes for all Canadian provinces, including requirements under the federal goods and services/harmonized sales tax (“GST/HST”) system, the provincial sales tax (“PST”) regimes of British Columbia, Saskatchewan and Manitoba and also Quebec’s value-added sales tax (“QST”) system. 

The course will also address the sales tax application to typical online purchases of traditional goods and services as well as digital goods and services and will cover the coordinated place of supply rules under the GST/HST and QST systems.  We will also cover how the PST provinces apply their taxes to typical taxable online sales of goods and certain services as well as digital goods and services.

Lastly, the course will contain a customs & trade component that highlights the interplay between Canadian indirect taxes and Canada’s customs regime regarding imports of goods into Canada by both resident and non-resident importers.

  • To review the sales tax registration requirements when selling traditional goods and services plus digital goods and services to both consumers and business-to-business, across Canada.
  • To know how sales taxes, apply to sales of typical traditional goods and services vs. digital goods and services and how the GST/HST and QST place of supply rules operate for each type and also when a taxable tangible or digital good or services and certain traditional services are subject to PST in one or more of those three provinces.
  • To analyze how Canada’s indirect tax systems and customs & trade regime intersect along with the importance of ensuring that products imported into Canada, must be properly reported and accounted for with the Canada Border Services Agency.
