MYCPE ONE

The internal audit profession is entering an important transition phase.

Beginning in 2026, Continuing Professional Education (CPE) will become mandatory for Internal Audit Practitioners (IAPs), as outlined by the Institute of Internal Auditors (IIA). While professional development has always been a priority, this formal reinforcement of CPE is now a requirement, and not just a recommendation.

For many internal auditors, this change raises practical questions:

What does this mean for my role? How should I prepare? And what kind of learning will qualify?

Let’s break it down.

Why the IIA Is Making CPE Mandatory for IAP

Internal audit today looks very different from what it was five years back.  With this mandatory renewal, IIA is shifting Internal Audit Practitioners (IAPs) into a permanent credential.

IIA is focusing on mandatory CPE for its certificate holders to ensure professional competency in this rapidly changing landscape. Earning this IAP entry-level designation is no longer a temporary badge that expires. It is now a legitimate and permanent credential for life.

Mandatory CPE ensures that Internal Audit Practitioners:

  • Stay aligned with evolving IIA Standards and Frameworks.
  • Maintain ethical and professional competence.
  • Keep pace with regulatory and technological changes.
  • Deliver higher-quality insights to stakeholders and boards.

In short, CPE is becoming a foundational part of professional credibility.

Who Does This Impact?

The 2026 mandatory CPE requirement for IAP will completely reassess the professional authority and credibility.

CPE requirement for IAP

  • Entry-level and early-career auditors building technical foundations
  • Mid-career auditors expanding into risk, advisory, or leadership roles
  • Audit managers and CAEs are responsible for team capability and quality assurance

This means a renewed focus on structured learning and development planning for internal audit teams.

What are the Changes and Updates for IAP

The Internal Audit Practitioner (IAP) designation is being enhanced to reflect modern internal audit practices, strengthen alignment with The IIA’s certification framework, and create a clearer career pathway.

IAP Mandatory CPE Requirement

Internal Audit Practitioners are required to complete 20 hours of CPE annually (starting from 2026)

Other IIA Qualifications

  • CIA: 40 CPE Hours
  • CCSA, CGAP, CFSA, CRMA, and/or QIAL: 20 CPE Hours

Updates in the IAP Exam Syllabus

  • Updated the subject topics to align with current global internal audit practices.
  • Stronger focus on internal audit fundamentals
  • Designed a clear career pathway to align with core IIA Certifications.

IAP as a Permanent Designation

IAP has now become a permanent professional designation. Permanent accredited badging offers long-term recognition. For global implementation, additional languages have been introduced.

Auto Status Updates

Well, the good thing is that no action is required for some of the following categories.

  • Active IAP - holders will be granted permanent status.
  • Expired IAP - status will be automatically reactivated and granted permanent status.

Beginning in 2026, IAP holders must complete the annual certification renewal process and 20 hours of CPE to maintain an active designation.

Claim IAP without exam.

  • CIA Applying in CCMS: Anyone who has ever earned the CIA can earn the IAP status by applying in CCMS.
  • CIA Part 1 Waiver: IAP holder applied for the CIA program and received a waiver for CIA Part 1. (Temporary Waiver till 1 June 2026)

What Counts as Relevant CPE for Internal Auditors?

As an IAP, you are validated with the foundational knowledge of internal audit principles and Global Internal Audit Standards. CPE must be relevant and practical to strengthen IAPs as independent advisors.

CPE for Internal Auditor

High-value CPE typically focuses on areas such as:

  • Internal Audit Fundamentals: Internal audit basic introduction, engagement planning, audit evidence, workpapers, assurance, and advisory engagements can be counted as CPE. But high-stakes learning, such as Internal audit methodology and assurance practices for effective audit execution, is valued.
  • Global Internal Audit Standards (IPPF): Training on the Global Internal Audit Standards (Domains I–V) is highly relevant to CPE.
  • Governance: CPE related to governance structures, risk management frameworks, and internal control frameworks directly influences the internal auditor's role and responsibilities.
  • Technological Expertise: Training in data analytics, fraud risk assessment, and regulatory compliance risks is now an integral part of the audit professional. Proficiency in tech is an advantage; it qualifies as relevant CPE.
  • Professional Conduct: Courses on ethical behavior, scenarios, and the IIA’s Code of Ethics support professional integrity, objectivity, and compliance with ethical requirements, which are essential for internal auditors.

This is where choosing the right CPE platform is important, to stay updated and meet your CPE needs seamlessly.
