SHRM, the Society for Human Resource Management, fosters optimal workplaces where employers and employees flourish. Serving as the primary authority on all things related to work, workers, and workplaces, SHRM is a distinguished expert, facilitator, and thought leader in addressing challenges in today's dynamic work settings.

Obtaining SHRM certifications like SHRM-CP or SHRM-SCP is one thing; maintaining the same is another. There is a recertification process for maintaining your SHRM certification credibility as it shows your utmost commitment to continuous learning and fostering the growth of your organization.

What are SHRM PDC Requirements?

The day you have been certified as SHRM-CP or SHRM-SCP, your first recertification cycle starts and ends on the last day of the month falling three years later from the date of your certification.

In other words, you have to recertify the credibility of your certification every three years and you can do this by opting for one of the two options given below:

  • Either earn 60 professional development credits (PDCs) within your 3-year recertification cycle.

  • Or retake the certification exam within the last year of your recertification cycle.

This cycle of recertification ends on the last day of your birth month and also there are no mandatory ethics requirements for the completion of SHRM requirements.

If you opt to acquire PDC via examinations, you must adhere to the following criteria:

  • Schedule the exam no sooner than 12 months before the conclusion of your recertification cycle.

  • Retake the exam at your present level.

  • Fulfil the exam application procedure.

  • Submit the full examination fee.

Note: If you do not pass the exam: Your credential will be revoked, and you will need to reapply and test as a new candidate. Additionally, you will not be able to pursue recertification through PDCs if you do not pass the recertification exam.

It is also important to keep in mind that if you have obtained extra PDCs in any recertification cycle, only 20 PDCs can be carried forward for the next recertification purpose.

How to get SHRM Recertification PDC?

Before we proceed to understand the process of obtaining SHRM PDC we should first know whether the PDC provider that we are choosing is an authorized PDC provider or not.

For Example: myCPE is an approved PDC provider by SHRM bearing approval number ‘RP5359’.

Here is a three-step process for SHRM recertification

Step 1: Sign in to the Certification Portal located at portal.shrm.org using your SHRM login email address and corresponding password.

Step 2: Navigate to the "Add PDCs" section and specify whether you possess an activity code. If you do possess a code, proceed to input it into the designated field. Alternatively, if you do not have a code, select the appropriate PDC category and provide the necessary activity details.

Step 3: Once you have reached the one-year mark within your certification cycle and have accrued 60 or more PDCs, you will receive an invitation to submit your completed recertification record.

Reporting and Documenting for SHRM Recertification Credits

There are two modes of reporting your credits depending on whether you are choosing SHRM-sponsored activities and events or not.

So if you are choosing to obtain your credits through a SHRM-sponsored activity or event then your credits will be auto-uploaded to your certification portal. You can check them in either the Advance Your Education or Advance Your Profession categories and these PDCs will appear in Bold Italicised items.

And, if you are choosing to obtain your SHRM credits from a non-sponsored PDC provider which is generally a third-party provider then you will need to document each activity into your account separately and will need to provide documents including the date, duration, and the name of the provider or sponsor of the activity.
