CE Requirements
30 CEs every 2 years.
License renewal period
The last day of the month is indicated by your certification period in the two-year cycle.
CE Reporting Cycle
Starts from the renewal date to the last day before the next renewal in the two-year cycle.
Ethics Requirement
2 hours of CFP® Board-approved Ethics CE each reporting period.
Carry Over Credits
CFP® Board does not allow Certified Financial Planners to carry over excess CE credits from the next reporting cycle.

What are CE Requirements for Certified Financial Planner (CFP®-US) Professionals?

All CFP® are required to complete at least 30 CEs during the 2-year recertification period. What is the Ethics Requirement for Certified Financial Planner (CFP®-US) Professionals?

  • Certified Financial Professionals are required to complete 2 hours of CFP® Board-approved Ethics CE each reporting period.
  • Ethics programs must be pre-approved by the CFP® Board to satisfy the Ethics CE requirement.
  • Ethics programs that have not been approved may count for general CE credit if they meet CFP® Board’s CE standards – however, non-approved ethics programs will not satisfy the CFP® Ethics CE requirement..

No, there are no minimum CE requirements in a particular subject area.

Candidates for CFP® certification can receive CE credit for completing:

  • Continuing education programs are approved by CFP® Board.
  • Completing college-level courses
  • Authoring publications
  • Teaching

Documentation Required for Non-Registered Live CE:

CFP® Board may request the following documentation provided by the non-registered educational provider:

  • Certificate of Completion/Attendance or unofficial transcript showing successful completion of the program.
  • Program summary or description.
  • Timed agenda with actual dates and times to verify topics, duration, meals, and breaks.

Documentation Required for Non-Registered Self-Study CE:

  • CFP® Board may request the following documentation provided by the non-registered educational provider:
  • Certificate of Completion or unofficial transcript showing successful completion of program and exam score.
  • Official, detailed outline/syllabus or course description.
  • A copy of the final assessment/examination provided by the CE provider or documentation from the CE provider verifying the number of assessment/examination questions
  • Evidence of a passing score of 70% or higher.

Important Note: Non-Registered self-study CE programs must have a minimum of 5 assessment questions per hour of CE credit. Exceptions are not granted.

A CFP® can complete 100% of the total required CE credit hours via self-study courses. i.e., a  Certified financial planner (CFP®) can complete all 30 CEs via self-study courses from CFP® Board-approved CE sponsors. As myCPE is approved by CFP® Board (Approval number 8061) our Packages for Certified Financial Planner (CFP®-US) is 100% compliant with that requirement.

No, certified financial planners (CFP®) cannot carry over excess credit earned in a particular renewal cycle.

Your Certification would expire.

All CE hours must be reported and processed by CFP® Board on or before the expiration of your two-year reporting period to avoid certification expiration. There is typically a six (6) day grace period to accommodate last-minute CE submissions

Candidates who do not finish the CFP® certification process within 12 months of passing the CFP® exam begin to accrue a continuing education requirement at a rate of 15 CE credit hours per year (prorated at 1.25 CE credit hours per month). This accrual begins 13 months after passing the exam and continues until the experience and degree requirements have been met. CE accrual stops after the second of these two requirements is met, and must be completed within 6 months for the candidate to be eligible for certification.

After CE completion, the candidate has access to the ethics application and payment steps of the process.

myCPE provides courses that are approved by CFP® boards to meet CFP® CE credit requirements. Based on the guidelines issued by these boards regarding Continuing Education Requirements we recommend the programs/ webinars be suitable for CFP® specified in each webinar. However, it will be the responsibility of each attendee to ensure that they are eligible for the Continuing Education Credits based on their occupation/ job profile, knowledge requirements as well as guidelines laid down by their regulatory board before registering for the webinars.
