CPE Requirements

Complete 120 CPE hours over each rolling 3-year cycle.

License Renewal Period

Renew annually. Iowa LPA licenses expire on June 30 each year, and renewal is completed online.

Carry Over Credits

Simplifying Regulations for 2026

CPE Requirement

Earn 120 hours over the 3-year period ending on the self-selected December 31 or June 30 preceding the July 1 renewal date.

Ethics Requirement

Earn at least 4 ethics hours during each applicable 3-year cycle.

Initial CPE Hours

If the first July 1 renewal is less than 12 months from the initial application, no CPE is required. If it is 12 to less than 24 months, report 40 hours. If it is 24 to 36 months, report 80 hours.

Subject Areas

Acceptable topics include technical and nontechnical professional skills that contribute directly to professional competence. Click here for more info.

Learning Modes

A maximum of 50% of CPE can be obtained through self-study.

Eligible Learning Activities

Qualifying activities include accounting-organization programs, technical sessions, webcasts, college courses, formal self-study, teaching credit, publication credit, and qualifying professional exams. Administrative firm meetings do not count.

CPE Deadline

Complete CPE by the self-selected December 31 or June 30 deadline that precedes the July 1 renewal. If June 30 is chosen, the CPE must be fully completed before the renewal application is submitted.

Reporting Period

The reporting period is the rolling 3-year period ending on the chosen December 31 or June 30 before the July 1 annual renewal date.

License Renewal

Renew annually. Licenses expire on June 30. A 30-day grace period applies with a late fee; after that, the license lapses. A licensee who cannot meet active-status CPE requirements may renew inactive if otherwise eligible.

Carry Over Credits

Iowa does not provide a separate excess-credit carryforward rule. Renewal is based on the qualifying hours completed within the self-selected 3-year cycle.

Record Retention

Retain continuing education documentation for 3 years after submitting the report claiming the credit. The board may request verification and audits of reported CPE on a test basis.

Renewal Fees

The annual active renewal fee is $100. Late active renewal within the 30-day grace period is $25. Annual inactive renewal is $50, and late inactive renewal within the 30-day grace period is $10.
