  • An Iowa (IA) LPA can complete a maximum of 60 CPE hours of non-technical courses every reporting cycle.
  • CPE courses in the non-technical subject area are limited to 50% of the total hours.
  • Non-Technical Subjects such as spirituality, personal health and/or fitness, sports and recreations, foreign language, and production which will not contribute directly shall not be allowed.

Iowa LPA requires 120 hours of CPE to be completed in every reporting cycle and must be reported to the Board by December 31 triennially as part of the renewal process.

The Iowa State Board of Accountancy does not explicitly outline specific subject areas for Continuing Professional Education (CPE) studies. Instead, they require that the subject matter directly contributes to the professional competence of the individual. Therefore, any program approved for NASBA fields of study available on myCPE will be eligible for CPE credits for Iowa Licensed Public Accountants (LPAs). You can refer to the state board's website for further details and clarification on this matter.

  • Yes, there is a minimum CPE requirement of Eight (8) credit hours devoted to financial statement presentation, such as courses covering the statements on standards for accounting and review services and accounting and auditing updates for Iowa (IA) LPAs who supervise compilation services or who sign/ authorize the signing of compilation reports on financial statements on behalf of a firm.
  • CPE courses in the non-technical subject area are limited to 50% of the total hours.
  • Non-Technical Subjects such as spirituality, personal health and/or fitness, sports and recreations, foreign language, and production which will not contribute directly shall not be allowed.

In addition to the above activities, the following mentioned activities may also contribute to continuing education

  1. Dinner, luncheon, and breakfast meetings of recognized organizations (maximum 25% of the total renewal requirement)
  2. Successful completion of professional examinations (maximum 50% of the total renewal requirement)
  3. University or college courses
  4. Instructor, Lecturer, or Discussion Leader (maximum 50% of the total renewal requirement)
  5. Authorship of books and articles (maximum 25% of the total renewal requirement)

Online renewal may require you to upload your CPE certificates of completion. If you are not liable to upload your certificates of completion, you should keep your copies in case the board performs an audit of your CPE, you will be responsible for submitting copies of your certificates of completion and/or verification of courses at the time of the audit. You must retain your documentation for at least three (3) years after the submission of the report claiming the credit.

  • Annual Registration and Renewal fees for an Active LPA License are $100.
  • Annual Registration and Renewal fees for an Inactive LPA License are $50.
  • LPA Firm Registration fee is $100.

  • You are in non-compliance if you do not complete at least 80 hours of acceptable CPE by December 31.
  • A licensee or certificate holder who fails to complete the 120 hours of CPE hours by the expiration date, but does so within 30 days following the expiration date shall be assessed a late fee of $25 and a penalty of $100.
  • If the holder fails to complete the CPE requirements even after the grace period the license will lapse and the holder cannot practice during that period.

  • If the initial permit is issued for less than 12 months then there are no CPE requirements for IA CPA.
  • If the initial permit is issued for more than 12 months, but less than 24 months the certificate holder shall report 40 hours of continuing professional education.
  • If the initial permit is issued for more than 24 months but less than 36 months the certificate holder shall report 80 hours of continuing professional education.

No, the short video (Nano learning) method is not approved for the CPE requirements of an Iowa Licensed Public Accountant (IA-LPA).

An Iowa (IA) LPA can complete 50% hours of the total required CPE credits hours via self-study courses. i.e., an Iowa (IA) LPA can complete 60 hours via self-study courses. 

A registrant must report, at a minimum, the CPE hours required for the registration renewal period. Hours that exceed the number required for the current registration renewal period may not be carried forward to a subsequent registration renewal period.
