Why is the finance profession still failing to attract women?Â
Women make up 26.4% of finance professionals in the United States and that ratio has been relatively unchanged for more than a decade. Why are current efforts failing? What are the barriers for women in finance? What can be done? Â
A large emphasis has been placed on getting more girls interested in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) in recent years, but there has not been a large success. The same barriers to STEM careers exist for finance and accounting when it comes to women. While establishing a pipeline of women into college degree fields in finance and accounting is crucial, it is also a long-range solution. Â
What can we do today to encourage more women to pursue careers in finance? It’s complicated, and it will take effort from all sides.
A change in perception of finance careers and the skillsets necessary, as well as engaging both men and women currently in the profession to be active role models can help break down some of the barriers. Â
