10 SEP 2024 / TAXES
Is Hunter Biden Facing Criminal Trials? How do you process the news that Hunter Biden, the son of U.S. President Joe Biden, is accused of nine misdemeanor and felony charges? This isn’t just a headline—it’s the reality of an unfolding legal battle. As with any case, the outcomes will be determined in court, and Hunter Biden will have to accept whatever verdict is handed down. His guilty plea, described as an “open plea,” was a unilateral move, signaling a significant turn in his legal strategy.
The IRS started looking into Hunter Biden’s taxes back in 2018. Special prosecutor David Weiss claims that Hunter tried to dodge more than $1.4 million in taxes, despite making over $7 million in total income between 2016 and 2020. According to the indictment, Hunter "willfully failed" to file his tax returns on time for 2017 and 2018 and used false business deductions on his 2018 return to lower his big tax bill as of February 2020.
Hunter Biden’s charges were tax evasion, filing a false personal tax return and a false corporate tax return, and six misdemeanor charges for failing to pay and file taxes on time. Hunter's lawyers argue that his struggles with alcohol and cocaine addictions, which he’s been open about, were behind his failure to pay.
Plus, There Are the Foreign Business Deals
Hunter Biden’s trial is expected to dive into his income from foreign business deals, including the millions he made while serving on the board of the Ukrainian company Burisma Holdings Limited, among other ventures.
House Republicans have criticized these deals for years, trying to connect them to President Biden and accusing the DOJ of not fully investigating the matter. Despite ongoing probes, no solid evidence shows that Joe Biden personally profited from these deals or intervened on his son's behalf.
And Not to Forget the Gun Charges Case
Back in June, Hunter Biden was convicted of three felonies for illegally buying a gun while struggling with drug addiction in 2018. He’s set to be sentenced on November 13.
Hunter Biden’s legal troubles are far from over, and several key developments are expected in the coming months. The case involves multiple charges, including tax evasion, gun charges, and foreign business dealings, and has garnered significant attention due to his connection to President Joe Biden.
As the case continues, the trial and sentencing will likely spark more debate, not just about Hunter Biden’s actions but their potential political impact on his father, President Joe Biden. While Hunter’s legal woes are serious, the outcome is still unfolding, and the next few months will be crucial in determining what happens next.
