Course Description

CPAs are the world's most trusted advisors. Clients seek advice from them well outside the realm of tax compliance, accounting and auditing. Given the profession’s long-standing regulatory framework, the Code of Professional Conduct, universally recognized for the qualities of integrity, objectivity, due care and competence and through enforceable guidance in the delivery of high standard of services, CPAs who want to enrich their practices and created stronger relationships with their clients should look into financial planning and investment advising services.

For the following reasons CPAs should look into providing financial planning and investment advising services now:

  • The change in client needs and expectations
  • The evolution of technology
  • The increasingly competitive landscape
  • The fears over the drastic change in retirement and investment portfolio values because of the COVID-19 pandemic impact on the financial markets
  • Most importantly: CLIENTS NEED YOU.

This CPE webinar dives into the subject with the following Key Topics:

  • Why CPAs should become financial planners
  • The best way for CPAs to become financial planners
  • Strategies to be the trusted and all-inclusive planner their clients already know they are!
  • An overview of the business and how to become a registered investment advisor.

This will be a unique value webinar for the CPAs who are looking to expand their operations and services.

Learning Objectives

  • To define what a Registered Investment Advisor is and why they’re the best fit for CPAs.
  • To recognize the top 5 reasons CPAs become CPA financial planners.
  • To identify the process for a CPA to become a Registered Investment Advisor.
  • To define a TAMP and identify what to look for in selecting a TAMP.
  • To recognize the most common objections and obstacles preventing a CPA from becoming a financial planner.

    About Presenter

    Shawn McCabe, MBA, CFP®

    Director, CPAlliance

After serving ten years of active military service and completing a combat tour in Afghanistan, Shawn started his career in financial planning and investments in 2007.  Joining the industry at the beginning of the “Great Recession” allowed him to quickly learn that the stock market can be unpredictably cruel, and at the same time, extremely rewarding to those who stayed the course. Also, during that time, he and his clients became an invaluable part of each other’s lives. They relied on him to get them through the worst markets in years. He learned more about life, trust, perseverance, and the undeniable need for clients to have genuine and executable plans.

As a Financial Advisor and the CPAlliance™ Director with CPS Investment Advisors, Shawn’s passions and profession are aligned. He gets to enrich and grow the CPAlliance™ program by helping CPAs become CPA financial planners and teach them how to help clients achieve or protect their financial independence. His ability to understand and breakdown the most complex problems, along with his broad professional experience, uniquely equips him to be the perfect coach, mentor, and trainer for the CPAlliance™ members, as well as, advise clients on how to achieve and protect their financial independence.

When he’s not helping CPAs and clients plan and execute, he can be found spending time endurance training (or binge watching the next great Netflix series) with his wife Amy, playing guitar, and singing worship tunes with Emma, watching Isabella make pyramids with her water ski team, or rooting Ethan on as he plays Lacrosse for his high school.

Shawn earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration and an MBA from Saint Leo University. He earned a Certificate in Financial Planning from Florida State University and became a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ professional in 2011.

Interesting and informative webinar. While my current position does not permit working in this capacity, i have had financial planning advisory exposure in the past, and had taken the Series 65 exam. This is good information to keep on hand should I choose to pursue this line of work in the future.

I thought the presenter did a great job delivering the information for the topic. It was to see if I was interested in moving this direction, so the topic was of interest. Gave a lot to think about, but I am uncertain if I will continue or not. It was a good presentation for me.

This was a great session and it was interesting to see all the different career paths available to CPAs! and the presenter stayed on the subject while covering a number of related subject points. Well-thought-out polling questions checked my learning

Overall an interesting topic and presenter was approachable. I do wish there was more information on to become licensed, real-world examples and pros and cons of taking on the new role.
